LBI ArchPro scientist Georg Zotti at International Astronomical Union Symposium

Computer scientist and astronomer Georg Zotti of the LBI ArchPro has been invited to speak at the Symposium of the International Astronomical Union on Education and Heritage in the Era of Big Data in Astronomy. In his talk he presented a few relevant features of the desktop planetarium Stellarium of which he is one of the voluntary developers.

The open-source software has become a basic tool for many professional astronomers, amateurs, teachers, educators and students around the world. He presented the basic facts about Stellarium and the development of virtual archaeoastronomy, as a combination of architecture, the landscapes and skyscapes. As a highlight, he also demonstrated the use of Stellarium in an outreach context at the Stonehenge exhibition of the LBI ArchPro in 2016. There, a 100 square meter projection screen was filled with astronomical data and information provided by Stellarium.

The International Astronomical Union (IAU) leads the worldwide coordination of astronomy and the fostering of communication and dissemination of astronomical knowledge among professional astronomers. The Symposium took place in December 8 – 12, 2020 in Argentina as a virtual meeting.
