PhD Initiative College ArchPro
In April 2010 scientists involved in the LBI ArchPro (Wolfgang Neubauer, Michael Doneus, Immo Trinks) together with other academics at LBI-partners Uni Vienna (Wolfgang Kainz, Erich Draganits), ZAMG (Wolfgang Lenhardt) and RGZM (Falko Daim) have successfully formulated and submitted a proposal to establish an Initiative PhD College for Archaeological Prospection (IC ArchPro). The IC ArchPro was setup in 2011 by the scientists from the Faculty of Earth Sciences, Geography and Astronomy, and the Faculty of Historical-Cultural Sciences at UNI Wien. It is dedicated to the development of novel techniques and methodological concepts for landscape archaeology based on state-of-the-art multidisciplinary archaeological prospection and spatial analysis. The IC ArchPro includes 10 funded PhD students as well as seven associated PhD students with a focus on the combination of remote sensing, geophysics, geomatics and geology and its application to archaeological research.
The IC ArchPro PhD students are research fellows connected to the LBI ArchPro, working with data and research questions related to its research programme. The PhD fellows are directly involved in the research of the institute by two monthly stages supporting LBI ArchPro fieldwork. The PhD fellows are also integrated within the partner consortium by respective stages at the partner institutions in relation to their specific dissertations. The IC ArchPro includes PhD students in the development and application of cutting-edge technology and integrated GIS-based spatial analysis and interpretation approaches with the goal to highlight important archaeological landscapes in Europe by visualising and analysing otherwise virtually invisible cultural heritage sites. The interdisciplinary approach will lead to a new quality of training for the PhD students due to the unique combination of theoretical and practical training in Vienna and in different European countries. The PhD’s are supervised by professors from Uni Vienna and academics at the LBI ArchPro and its partners.
The detailed dissertation themes of the IC PhD candidates can be reviewed on the IC ArchPro homepage.
