ZAMG

Zentralanstalt für Meteorologie und Geodynamik (Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics), Department Geophysics

ZAMG is one of the oldest institutions worldwide researching weather and climate as well as seismology and geomagnetism. The Department of Geophysics at the ZAMG has an experience of over 30 years in geophysical prospection methods applied to archaeology. In 1996 an interdisciplinary research team has been installed, carrying out numerous survey projects both in Austria and abroad and bearing the brand name Archeo Prospections®. Archeo Prospections® developed highly specialised measuring devices, optimised measuring logistics and data processing software in a close collaboration of the disciplines of geophysics, archaeology and computer sciences. It so possesses several gradiometer-magnetometry systems, GPR (ground penetrating radar) devices of the newest generations and other geophysical prospection systems. The team has also outstanding expertise in data and image processing and archaeological interpretation, gained from over one hundred national and international prospection projects.

The ZAMG is highly interested in a close co-operation with the LBI on further development of archaeological-geophysical prospection methods including measuring devices, logistics and software with regard to higher efficiency and large-scale surveys. The enhancement of the existing software and the proposed software tools should provide the ZAMG with the possibility to process and interpret geophysical data in three dimensions including the topography, the depiction of calculated parameters and virtual reconstruction of archaeological structures. In general the ZAMG expects within partnership with the LBI the advancement of geophysical prospection methods in terms of its fundamental mandate of soil examination as a special contribution to the archaeological research in Austria and worldwide.
