Spectroscopy

Since spring 2012, field spectral measurements have been made with a SVC GER 1500 radio spectrometer in the Visible and Near-Infrared (VNIR) spectral domain.

Due to bad weather, the planned systematic sampling scheme could not be completely fulfilled. However, important knowledge was gained on how to improve the field spectroradiometry in the future. To this end, a new spectrometer station was built in 2013, while new reflectance data have been acquired during the excavations of a circular ditch system at Hornsburg (summer 2013). Besides the GER 1500, the OceanOptics JAZZ spectrometer was applied to capture reflectance values in the Near-Ultraviolet (NUV). Processing of these data is accomplished in a semi-automatic way by small MATLAB programs, while the data themselves are managed with help of an Access database. Although the spectral data acquired over the past two years is less than expected, we have seen how even the smallest variables can influence the result and therefore were able to optimise our data sampling strategy as well as the indication of the sample locations in the field.
