GIS based Counter IED/UXO Information System

In the context of humanitarian operations and peace-keeping missions, the protection of the troops, and in particular of civilian helpers of NGOs and the civilian population in general, is a particular challenge. This applies particularly to the fight against threatening explosive ordnance. The approach for the counter IED/UXO reconnaissance is based on the hierarchical GIS-based integration and modelling of already existing knowledge and the efficient integration of close-range reconnaissance information in real time, which is collected by air- and ground-based, multimodal and hybrid sensors in acute operations. Based on a decade of successful joint interdisciplinary preliminary work by the project partners and successful first pilot studies with the BMLV’s ARWT, an experimental R&D project for the conception and development of a prototype of an innovative GIS based counter IED/UXO information system will be carried out. The project will extend conventional sensors used by ARWT with remote sensing systems (LiDAR) and motorized, automatically positioned sensor arrays (magnetic, electrical, acoustic and electromagnetic) adapted by the applicant for the exploration of archaeological cultural heritage and engineering geophysics. The experimental development is based on specific, realistic problem scenarios defined with the user as part of a large-scale case study. The functionality of the planned information system is based on the fact that long-term digital basic information from different sources is available, which can be efficiently supplemented in acute cases – comprehensible for experts and decision makers – by high-resolution and precisely located multimodal close-range reconnaissance information from specifically adapted sensor systems in real time in order to guarantee competent and rapid decisions.
