Remote Sensing

Repeated test flights have been undertaken in several of the case study areas.

 The case study area Zillingdorf in particular was repeatedly covered with Airborne Hyper spectral Scanning (AHS) by partner ABT on several dates and at different times of the day. This is a unique collection of AHS-data, which will give new insights into the effect of time of day, time of year, and atmospheric conditions during AHS-data acquisition. By June 2012 the AHS und ALS remote sensing data acquisition has been completed for the case study areas of Großrußbach in Kreuttal, Carnuntum and St. Anna. At Uppåkra approx. 40 km² ALS and AHS data was acquired through a grant provided by the Torsten Söderberg Foundation. A detailed analysis of the Uppåkra ALS data has considerably progressed after careful processing and was shared with the partners UV and UNI Lund for further interpretation.

Oblique aerial photography flights were conducted over Carnuntum, Kreuttal and Zillingdorf mainly during May and June, the main crop-mark season. Test flights in project areas with a new camera kit related to the FWF-funded project ARAP (FWF-P24116-N23) were coordinated by the partner Uni Vienna. The project used a commercially available controller board as cost-effective, accurate and precise GNSS/IMU solution to record all essential exterior orientation parameters for the direct geo-referencing of aerial images shot by a digital reflex camera. Besides this hardware, MATLAB-based software was developed to automatically process the raw measurements. Ground-based test and accuracy measurements have been executed. Further flights with a manned aircraft and an unmanned multicopter have been scheduled.

A fascinating new research focus was directed towards the novel Airborne Laser Bathymetry technique (ALB) in collaboration with Uni Vienna and ABT. A new generation of airborne bathymetric laser scanners utilises narrow green laser pulses for high-resolution hydrographical surveying. A small archaeological pilot study conducted at the northern Adriatic coast of Croatia, co-financed by partner RGZM, was very successful in imaging terrestrial as well as underwater archaeological structures.

All relevant aerial images of the case studies Kreuttal, Zillingdorf, Halbturn, Carnuntum, and St. Anna have been orthorectified using Erdas LPS. For all other case studies, available imagery has been checked and – if necessary – orthorectified. Summaries, statistics and reports were created for all case studies. Besides the standard photogrammetric solution for orthorectification, a new computer-vision based approach has been implemented. The operating principles and obtainable accuracy of this method have been published in several scientific papers.
